Not So Ordinary

Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” (Revelations 4:11)

Most mornings the sky is spread with brilliant shades of orange and pink. Stillness drapes itself across the landscape outside the window as nighttime hides away for a while. The Lord who furnishes daybreak with such stunning artistry uses creation’s magnificent beauty to circle our hearts close to his at the outset of a routine day.

We must choose to keep our eyes wide open lest we miss God at work in creation’s regularly scheduled events. Clearly, he’s not confined to Sunday morning sermons or the occasional dramatic answer to prayer. Our limitless God is intimately involved in the smallest areas of our lives. The One who miraculously spoke the world into existence is the same God who breaks into our agendas with his sacred interruptions, awakening our souls to his presence right where we are.

The gospels constantly reveal Jesus intersecting the mundane moments of those he encountered. He met a woman at a well, a tax collector up in a tree, a paralyzed man lying by a pool. He cradled babies in his arms and used the simple contents of a young boy’s lunch to spread a glorious feast for five thousand.

In each case, he disrupted their ordinary lives with his extraordinary power and love. This same God walks alongside us as we plant one foot in front of the other or cautiously dip a toe into some scary new adventure we aren’t quite sure will turn out grand.

Christ sometimes described himself in tangible terms that we can easily relate to, picture in our minds, grasp and hold onto for comfort and strength when complex and complicated circumstances are blocking our view. He calls himself Bread and Water; he is the Rock, the Shepherd, the Lamb, and the Door. He is Light to fend off darkness, and the Vine for us to cling to for dear life.

Concrete terms for our invisible God who sings to us through creation and calls to us through his Word, reminding us of his not-so-ordinary divine existence in the midst of our commonplace worlds.
