“But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love.” (Psalm 33:18)

Some mornings, I rise before the sun, lavish my time in the reflective study of Scripture, and exercise my limbs before striding home for a nutritious breakfast. On other days, I drag my weary body out of bed, acute exhaustion already in evidence, and slouch through the day with the entire world perched between my shoulder blades.

The house occasionally appears immaculate and orderly -‐-‐-‐ dust particles conquered, crumbled garments smoothed by a steaming iron, refrigerator packed with wholesome snacks. More often though, layers of grime sit conspicuously atop the furniture, bills lie stacked in cumbersome piles, and nothing nutritious beckons from within ninety meters of the kitchen door.

Periodically, my fingers fly across the keys, and the computer screen ignites with my diligent attempts at productivity. Afterward, a smile of pleasure creeps across my face at the intriguing piece before me. Far more regularly, the plastic stares back vacantly, and I meander away, distracted by my failed attempts at creating anything meaningful.

It is easy to scrutinize ourselves and discover either great lack or pride’s puffed perspective. But, the Father does not grade us, is not impressed with our accomplishments or surprised by our misgivings. His love comes without conditions, without pretense or accompanying pressure. The Master of earth and sky and everything in between is intimately aware of our short sides and long suits. He pursues us on thrilling days and in those moments when we feel unworthy. Our performance does not tip the scale in either direction; his graciousness comes with no strings attached.

He lavishes himself on our behalf, making himself accessible in our daily routine by the power of his Spirit. He is the great initiator, pursuer, and lover on those good days and those that don’t seem quite so good at all.
